During these early years, the maths children will be learning at school can be broken down into the following: Counting: ordering numbers, including understanding the idea of 'more than' and 'less than' Reading and Writing Number: in their word form and their numerical form Place Value: recognizing the significance of the position of a digit with regard to units, tens, hundreds etc Number Sequences: continuing simple sequences, like 1,3,5,7.. Odds and Evens: an appreciation Rounding: learning to estimate and approximate Fractions: idea of 1/2, 1/4, 3/4 The four main mathematical operations: adding, with an awareness of similar word like sum, total subtraction, with an awareness of similar word like minus, take away, difference multiplication:with an awareness of similar word like times. Also learning easier times table 2x, 3x, 5x, 10x Division idea of sharing by smaller numbers Measuring Objects: their length, mass or capacity. Using appropriate units - metre, kilogram, litre Telling the time: along with the various words required to do so, also days of the week and months of the year 2D Shapes: recognizing squares, triangles, rectangles, circles etc 3D Shapes: recognizing cubes, cuboids, cylinders etc Symmetry: basic line symmetry Co-ordinates: basic idea of co-ordinate position Data Handling: putting data into charts, such as bar, line, pie or pictograms. Interpreting such charts. Solving World Problems: this will be using any of the above ideas to recognize the problem and then solve it. Towards the end of Year 2, children will take a SATs test as specified in the national cuuriculum. This will assess their attainment thus far. Tuition can address any or all of the above areas, and provide practice in SATs tests by the use of past papers.
